The Long Beach Sharks of the NA3HL are pleased to announce that forward Daniel Backstrom has committed to play NCAA Division III hockey at Westfield State University.
In two seasons with the Sharks (then New York Aviators), Backstrom was able to net an impressive 56 Goals and 137 Assists for a total of 193 points. This past season, Backstrom, 21, was second in in NA3EHL scoring with 96 points (32 goals, 64 assists). He was also named to the All-NA3EHL 1st Team.
Backstrom along with linemate Jimmy Warrick helped lead their team to the USA Hockey Junior Nationals Finals in 2015 and the NA3EHL semi-finals in 2016. He was also selected to play on the NA3EHL West Division Prospects Team, who competed at the NA3HL Showcase in December of 2015.
His leadership on the ice never went unnoticed by his Coach, "Danny is a workhorse that makes everyone around him better,” said Head Coach Mike Stanaway. "I couldn't be happier for him and wish him nothing but success as he begins his College career at Westfield,” added Stanaway.
The Helsinki, Finland native has come a long way since being scouted by New York back in the spring of 2014. "We got to see Danny at the 2014 Pre-Draft Showcase and were impressed by the way he protected the puck and carried the play,” said Sharks Owner Jim Loughran. "He quickly became a quiet leader that let his game do the talking. We are excited to see him continue his dream of playing NCAA Hockey.”
