North Iowa forward Larson makes college commitment

May 10, 2017
Barely a week after Academy of Holy Angels alumnus Marshall Barnes announced his college commitment to Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota, a second Holy Angels and NA3HL North Iowa Bulls forward is heading to the college ranks. Owen Larson has announced his commitment to Arizona State University’s ACHA Division I squad, following an outstanding junior career.
A year after setting the Holy Angels single-season scoring record with 37 goals, the Minneapolis native settled into the NAHL with the Minot Minotauros and the Minnesota Magicians to start the 2015-16 season. That season ended in a Bulls uniform, with Larson notching nearly a point a game on the way to North Iowa’s third national championship in four years. This season was Larson’s masterpiece as a junior player, with 68 points, including 27 goals, in 53 appearances for the reigning Central Division champs.
“The campus is awesome,” says Larson. “I really liked getting a chance to see it and everything that ASU has to offer. I am also looking forward to joining a hockey team that has a winning tradition and leaving the rink everyday wearing flip flops.”
Arizona State has certainly made its share of college hockey news in recent years, with the Sun Devils’ previous ACHA Division I squad making its debut as a full-time NCAA Division I member this past season. One of the Sun Devils’ remaining Division II clubs made the move to the Division I club level this past season, winning 24 games and qualifying for the ACHA Division I national tournament in the school’s return to top-level club hockey.
“Owen is not afraid to get the tough areas and he gets rewarded for it,” says ASU head coach Josh Brown. “We expect Owen to be a guy that we can rely on and who can contribute to the scoresheet nightly.”
The North Iowa Bulls extend their best wishes to Owen Larson as he begins his college hockey career at Arizona State.
