Bobcats' St. Baldrick’s fundraiser another success

March 15, 2011

The Bismarck Bobcats teamed up with the St. Baldrick’s Foundation during Monday’s game against the Austin Bruins at the VFW Sports Center and raised over $8,500 for the charity.

It's the second straight year that the Cats have partnered with St. Baldrick’s and local organizer Basin Electric Power Cooperative and the first time they’ve ever donned special edition green and white jerseys for the cause. The jerseys were auctioned off after the game, with team captain and leading scorer Matt Gates’ uniform fetching the high bid of the night at $1,000.

The St. Baldrick’s Foundation centers around volunteers earning pledges to shave their heads - usually on St. Patrick’s Day - in order to raise funds for the most promising cures for childhood cancer.

In the spirit of the night, Bobcats head coach Layne Sedevie and assistant coach Adam Gill both got their heads shaved during the first intermission. Bobcats play-by-play voice Paul Teeple joined the coaches in facing the clippers after pledging to go bald if the team’s Twitter account reached 500 followers - a feat accomplished four hours before game time Monday.

“We’re so thrilled at the way the event turned out,” beamed event coordinator Emily McKay from Basin Electric. “I never expected to raise so much money from the jerseys; the fans and players were great.”

Four Bobcat players - Charlie Mosey, Jason Nash, John Furgele and Nick Miglio - will take part in the St. Baldrick’s Day event at Basin Electric on Thursday, where they, too, will get their heads shaved for the cause. Basin Electric’s St. Baldrick’s Day event has already raised over $78,000 for 2011 - in addition to the money raised Monday at the VFW Sports Center.

Fans interested in making separate donations to this year’s St. Baldrick’s Day event can find more information online.

"Bobcat Hockey would like to thank all of its fans, sponsors, volunteers and staff, and especially its partners at Basin Electric, for making this year’s St. Baldrick’s Night a smashing success," said Bobcats owner Thom Brigl.
