NA3HL announces Easton Hockey Divisional Stars of the Week

The North American 3 Hockey League (NA3HL) today announced the Divisional Stars of the Week presented by Easton Hockey for the week ending November 16, 2014.  The divisional stars of the week is an award given each week of the regular season to the top performing players in each of the five divisions of the NA3HL as nominated by their head coaches.

Central Division Star of the Week: Ryan Martin, forward, Wisconsin Whalers

Whalers forward Ryan Martin, 19, had a big week as he helped his club to a three-point weekend in a home-and-home series with the La Crosse Freeze.  The native of Rochester, MN, has returned to the line-up with a vengeance as he racked up another seven points this past weekend and now has 17 points in just 10 games played this season. On Saturday, Martin (5’10/170) had a goal and an assist in a 4-3 overtime loss. On Sunday, Martin had a hat-trick, which included the game-winning goal, and two assists in an 8-1 road win. “Ryan’s line is playing great together and he is really playing well. He has brought a lot to our team since coming back from mononucleosis,” said Whalers head coach Tom McDermott.

East Division Star of the Week: Gavin Cummings, defense, Pittsburgh Vengeance

Thanks to a pair of wins during the weekend over Cleveland, the Pittsburgh Vengeance increased their lead atop the East Division. Defenseman Gavin Cummings, 18, was excellent on the blueline as the native of Williamsville, NY record four points in the two wins. On Saturday, Cummings (6’4/180) had an assist in a 5-3 win at home against the Jr. Lumberjacks. On Sunday, Cummings scored twice, including the game-winning goal and added an assist in a 3-2 win on the road. For the season, Cummings is tied for 2nd in NA3HL scoring for all defensemen with 20 points. “Gavin's offensive game has really blossomed for us this season especially on the power play. He is still young and developing his all around game,” said Pittsburgh head coach Dave Dorsey.

Frontier Division Star of the Week: Brandt Miller, forward, Helena Bighorns

The Helena Bighorns got back to the winning side of things this weekend with a home sweep of the Yellowstone Quake. 20-year-old forward Brandt Miller had a big weekend with six points and a +8 rating in the two games. On Friday, the native of Havre, MT had a goal and two assists in a 5-2 win. On Saturday, Miller (5’7/155) had two goals, including the game-winner and added an assist in a 6-1 win. For the season, Miller is 2nd on the team in scoring with 21 points in just 13 games played. “Brandt had a great weekend to add to his success this season. He is a guy that we can throw out in any situation during a game.  Brandt is becoming a natural leader and his teammates are growing and succeeding from his leadership,” said Helena head coach Jon Jonasson.

South Division Star of the Week: Alex Johanson, forward, Topeka Capitals

New Topeka forward Alex Johanson, 18, had a big impact for the Capitals this weekend as they picked up a three-game sweep of the Imperials in Sugar Land to stay right in the heat of the South Division lead. The native of Skokie, IL had seven points in the three wins and had at least a point in each of the wins. On Friday, Johanson (6’1/190) scored twice and added an assist in a 9-4 win. On Saturday, he had the game-winning goal in a 6-3 win and on Sunday, he had a goal and two assists in a 5-4 overtime win. In seven games with the Capitals this season, Johanson already has nine points. "Alex was an addition to club a few weeks ago. He's been a welcomed addition to our organization and is buying into the Topeka culture very quickly. We are happy to see him adapt, be successful and look forward to seeing him grow as a player,” said Topeka head coach Anthony Bohn.

West Division Star of the Week: Robbie Goor, goalie, Twin City Steel

Although they had just one game this past weekend, the Twin City Steel made it three wins in a row with a 3-0 shutout of Breezy Point on Saturday night to stay firmly in 3rd place in the West. 18-year-old goalie Robbie Goor posted his second consecutive shutout as he made 18 saves in the win. The native of Anoka, MN now has a shutout streak of 142:21 going and has posted a 7-4 record this season with a 2.98 goals against average and a 89.8% save percentage. “Robbie epitomizes what you want out of a goalie.  He comes ready to work, and is ready to step in net as soon as his number is called.  He is the first one at the rink each day as is well liked within the locker room.  We have asked Robbie to step up several times throughout the season and he certainly has won some big games for us,” said Twin City General Manager Bryant Black.
