Generals open NA3HL season with 6-4 win in Danbury

September 5, 2022

Northeast 6 @ Danbury 4 – The 2022-23 NA3HL regular season officially got underway on Sunday as the Northeast Generals picked up a 6-4 road win in Danbury against the Jr. Hat Tricks.

Braeden Kennedy found the back of the net twice while the Generals offense as a group totaled 45 shots of goal in the season opening 6-4 win over Danbury.

The start of the game went about as perfect as one can draw up for the Generals three goals at the 8 second, 1:59, and 3:54 marks of the first period. Matthew Nuzzolilo started the party by finding a loose puck in the slot and an empty net thanks to a strong play deep in the zone by Braeden Kennedy.

Gabe Vijuk followed by capitalizing on a faceoff play which saw centerman John Dicio push the puck on net leading to a rebound out front for Vijuk to hammer home. Nuzzolilo added an assist on the third goal by carrying the puck into the offensive zone on the right side and shooting for a rebound with Kennedy cutting towards the backdoor post. Kennedy tapped the puck to the back of the net giving the Gens a 3-0 lead in only 4 minutes of play.

The second half of the period saw the tide turn as Danbury buried a pair of goals to carry a one goal, 3-2 deficit into the first intermission. First at the 14:16 mark Jordan Osafo won an offensive zone faceoff to Robert Martufi scoring on a quick release shot. Then only 1:21 later at 15:37 Patrick Khorkin found the back of the net after receiving a pass from below the goal line from Brody Trew.

The Generals opened the second period in a similar manner to the first with a pair of unanswered goals. Kennedy scored his second of the game by firing a shot into the upper right corner of the net on a fast break only 2:11 into the frame. At 7:31 Avi Sindhu sacrificed his body to keep the puck in the offensive zone and Gabe Coppo didn’t let his efforts go to waste finding possession and sliding the puck between the goalie’s legs to extend the lead to 5-2.

Again, similar to the first period the Hattricks responded with two goals of their own. Osafo picked up his second point of the night with a highlight reel goal at 12:53 picking a corner after toe dragging his way around a defender. Rogers then chose to shoot on a 2-on-1 break and chose right bringing the score to 5-4 at the 13:15 mark. The score held through the end of the second period and into the break.

The Generals scored the only goal of the third period while on the powerplay at 13:59. Mac Reed held the puck in the middle of the blue line and threw a shot on net. After the save was made Michael Locke found the puck and put the rebound into the back of the net to regain a two goal lead 6-4.

Ian Kangas started in goal for the Generals making 21 saves on 25 shots in the win to bring his record to 1-0. His counterpart Ryan Maguire stopped 39 of 45 shots in the losing effort and starts the campaign 0-1.
