Friday Finals: Cyclones Take Down Grizzlies in a Shootout

December 28, 2024

The Cyclones took home a win in a shootout while Hugh Deinema (bottom) scored the game winner for Wisconsin

Rochester 5 @ Wausau 6 (SO) - Jake Garrow scored the only goal in the shootout as the Wausau Cyclones topped the Rochester Grizzlies 6-5 on Friday night. Rochester got out to a 2-0 lead as Ben Parent and Tyler Steuck starting the scoring. Back to back goals from Connor Dvorak and Micah Saxon tied the game at two apiece. Baylor Stebbins put the Grizzlies ahead 3-2 but Landon Bechtolt netted a pair of goals and Jake Garrow would add another to put Wausau up 5-3. Steuck scored his second of the night to bring Rochester within one but it was Tommy Woods who tie the game with just 13 seconds left to force overtime. After a scoreless overtime, a shootout was needed and that’s when Garrow put the team on his back and gave Wausau the extra point.

Peoria 4 @ Wisconsin 5 - In a back-and-forth affair, the Wisconsin Woodsmen came out on top, defeating the Peoria Mustangs 5-4. The teams traded a pair of goals in the opening period with Maxim Lazo and Charles Murray scoring for the Woodsmen and Ian Ingles and Jordan Mini netted goals for Peoria. In the second, Nolan Mix but Wisconsin ahead 3-2 but back-to-back goals from Skyler Tompkins put Peoria ahead heading into the final 20 minutes. Mix’s second of the night evened the game at four and then three and a half minutes later Hugh Deinema tallied the eventual game winning goal to give Wisconsin the two points in the standings. Steven Kelley was given the win in net as he stopped 30 of 34 shots. Charlie Maquet finished the evening with 34 saves for the Mustangs.

St. Louis 3 @ West Bend 2 (OT) - Mason Andrew’s second goal of the night was the game winner in overtime as the St. Louis Jr. Blues continued their strong play, knocking off the West Bend Power 3-2. Blake Mitchell opened the scoring for West Bend with his seventh of the year. In the second Eric Denny and Andrew would score to put the Jr. Blues ahead 2-1. Mike Sobaski would tie the game midway through the third period with his ninth of the campaign. That set the stage for Andrew’s overtime winner, his 10th of the season. Travis Visvadra got the win in the blue paint, making 33 saves. Adam Prokop was dealt the loss as he made just 15 stops.
