NA3HL announces monthly player awards for January

February 4, 2014

The North American 3 Hockey League (NA3HL) has announced its monthly player awards for the month of January.  The Easton Hockey NA3HL Forward of the Month is Richie Marenis from the North Iowa Bulls. The Easton Hockey NA3HL Defenseman of the Month is Matt Fosdick from the North Iowa Bulls.  The Brian’s Custom Sports NA3HL Goaltender of the Month is Anders Franke from the Flint Junior Generals.  Only players who are nominated by their respective teams are considered for the NA3HL monthly awards.

Easton Hockey NA3HL Forward of the Month: Richie Marenis, North Iowa Bulls

Simply put, North Iowa Bulls forward Richie Marenis, 20, dominated in the month of January. The native of Riga, Latvia helped lead the Bulls to a perfect 7-0 record during the month and in those seven games Marenis (6’1/190) recorded an amazing 29 points, which included 16 goals and 13 assists. Twice during the month, Marenis was named as the West Star of the Week and he was the #2 star once. Not only did Marenis score in all seven games during the month of January, but he recorded a multi-point game in all seven. Marenis had two six-point games during the month, one five-point game and two four-point games. He was named the West Division Star of the Week in back-to-back weeks on January 21st and again on January 28th. Marenis is 3rd in the NA3HL in scoring this season with 87 points in 32 games and his 41 goals currently leads the NA3HL. “I have said it before, but Richie is playing the best hockey of his career right now,” said Bulls head coach Todd Sanden. “He is seeing the puck well and his vision is the best it has ever been. He can distribute the puck, but he also knows when to shoot. He makes everyone around him better.”

Easton Hockey NA3HL Defenseman of the Month: Matt Fosdick, North Iowa Bulls

Another big part of North Iowa’s success in January was the continued development and success of defenseman Matt Fosdick. The 19-year-old from Brookfield, Wisconsin, joined the Bulls during the NA3HL Showcase and hasn’t looked back. Fosdick (6’2/215) had his best month of the season in January as he totaled 13 points in the seven games (all wins) that North Iowa had.  That included two goals, 11 assists and Fosdick was also a remarkable +15 during the month. Fosdick’s January performance included four multi-point games including back-to-back four point games on January 18-19 and back-to-back two point games on January 30-31. In 20 games played this season, Fosdick has 18 points and is a +27. “Matt was an important piece in our playoff and National Championship run last season, so it was good to get him back in late November,” said Bulls head coach Todd Sanden. “He brings a lot of physicality to the game and skates as well as any defenseman we have.”

Brian’s Custom Sports NA3HL Goaltender of the Month: Anders Franke, Flint Junior Generals

It was a perfect month for the Flint Junior Generals and goaltender Anders Franke. The 20-year-old from Zimmerman, Minnesota helped Flint to the East Division regular season championship during the month, as he posted a 6-0 record with a 1.23 goals against average and a 94.3% save percentage to go along with two shutouts. Franke (5’7/160) faced 122 shots during the month and stopped 115 of those shots. Franke’s shutouts during January came in back-to-back starts in wins over Cleveland and Toledo. He never gave up more than three goals in a game and he hasn’t lost a game since back on December 22nd. Franke currently leads the NA3HL in wins with 24, ranks tied for 2nd in shutouts with three and is in the top seven in goals against average (1.93) and save percentage (92.1%). He has also played the most minutes of any goalie in the league. “Anders is the backbone of the team. He is calm, carries himself like a pro and knows what it takes to be successful on and off the ice,” said Flint head coach Steve Howard. “He has the maturity it takes to be a leader and I know he will find the right situation to continue his career and play college hockey.”
