Bulls win, Flint and Helena fall on Day 2 at Nationals

The USA Hockey Tier III Junior Nationals continue on Saturday after the North Iowa Bulls moved to 2-0 with a win on Friday, while Flint and Helena suffered their first losses.

North Iowa Bulls 5 vs. Dells Ducks 1 – The Bulls made quick work of the MNJHL #2 seed Dells Ducks on Friday thanks to 38 saves from goaltender Chris Amsden. The Bulls scored just :08 seconds apart in the 1st period on goals from Matt Kroska and Austin Jackson. The lead increased to 5-0 in the 2nd period as the Bulls scored three more goals from Conor Jonasson, Rihards Marenis and Ron Lindgren. The Ducks picked up a goal early in the 3rd period to break Amsden’s shutout streak, which last well over three games. The Bulls moved to 2-0 at the event and can win their pool with a win on Saturday. Boxscore

Flint Junior Generals 0 vs. Springfield Pics 6 – The Junior Generals found it tough sledding against Springfield as the Pics outshot the Junior Generals 40-26 on their way to a 6-0 shutout win. Anders Franke made 34 saves in the loss as the Junior Generals fell to 1-1 at the event.  Boxscore

Helena Bighorns 0 vs. Boston Jr. Bruins 6 – The Bighorns lost just their second regulation game of the season as the Jr. Bruins scored twice in each period on their way to a 6-0 win, handing the Bighorns their first lost of the Nationals event. Austin Brihn got the start in goal for Helena and made 33 saves on 39 Jr. Bruins shots. Sean Lawrence got the shutout for Boston, making 18 saves. It was the first time all season that the Bighorns have failed to register a goal and been shutout. Boxscore
