Breezy Point forward Smieja makes NCAA commitment

July 14, 2015
The Breezy Point North Stars, proud members of the NA3HL, are pleased to announce that forward Benji Smieja has committed to play NCAA Division III ice hockey at Marian University.

“My time as a North Star was something I'll never forget especially this past season.  Bob and Joyce are doing a great job being owners and making a great junior hockey team. Craig and Jeff I can't thank you enough for all you did for me this season,” said Smieja.

“Thank you very much to everyone, especially my teammates & god who supported me to be able to play at Marian University in Wisconsin in this process. I'd like to thank three coaches that had a big impact on my hockey career. Bruce Olson my JV coach in 10th grade that passed away my senior year, my varsity coach Jay Hardwick, and Jeff Worlton who made me a better player and an even better man off the ice. Thank you Breezy Point for the great memories.”

In his two seasons with the North Stars, the Minnesota native recorded 21 points and has gained high respect from head coach Jeff Worlton.

“I really enjoyed watching Benji grow as a hockey player and as a young man,” said Worlton.  “Benji joined the program late in the season and the impact he had on the ice can’t be measured by goals or assist.  Benji's showed his physical presence during his very first game in the North Stars uniform and got us back into the game.  Win or lose, he did what he had to do to help the team.”

The Marian University Sabres recorded a 14-12-1 overall record in Division III ice hockey this past year and an NCHA conference record of 9-8-1.  The Sabres had much of their success at home as they enjoyed a 8-4-0 record on home ice.
