St. Louis forward Monreal makes NCAA commitment
March 4, 2019
The St. Louis Jr. Blues, proud members of the NA3HL, would like to congratulate forward Matt Monreal on committing to play NCAA Division II hockey at Southern New Hampshire University.
The Penmen are located in Manchester, N.H., and play in the Northeast 10, a NCAA Division II conference: on Saturday they defeated St. Anselm to win the NE10 championship.
A second-year forward originally from Wauwatosa, Wisconsin., the 5’9/154 lbs. right-hander has been a point-per-game player since coming to St. Louis. After scoring 47 points (15 G, 32 A) in as many games in 2017-18, Monreal has followed that up with a stellar 2018-19, with a team-leading 27 goals and 32 assists in 40 games. To cap off his breakout year, this January he was given a mid-season promotion to team alternate captain.
“We were very excited to recruit Matt two years ago and he has been nothing short of impressive,” said Jr. Blues head coach Chris Flaugher. “He’s got a great playmaking ability, using his speed and vision to create chances and finish them as well. On top of that, he’s been a great presence in the dressing room and has truly deserved a spot in our leadership group this year. [SNHU coach] Sean Walsh is getting a great player and a better person in Matt, and we’d like to congratulate him on committing.”
Flaugher added that the main catalyst for Monreal’s commitment to SNHU was his performance at this year’s NA3HL Showcase in Blaine, Minnesota. “Matt really put himself on the map with his performance up in Blaine,” where he scored seven points (4 G, 3 A) including a hat-trick against Lewiston/Auburn. “His efforts up there got him offers from several great schools, and he really felt that Southern New Hampshire would be the best fit for him both in the classroom and on the ice. He’s a great example of what the NA3HL experience can do for a player.”
Monreal will join Jake Cox as Jr. Blues alumni with the Penmen: this year Cox scored 8 goals and 13 assists in his freshman season at SNHU, second amongst all players.
