3HL games at Showcase wrap-up with more excitement

September 21, 2011

The final day of 3HL games at the NAHL Showcase concluded this past Sunday with yet another today of tight competition.  A day after all four games were decided by a goal, Sunday’s action was almost as good with three of the four games decided by a goal.

All games were played at the Schwan Super Rink in Blaine, Minnesota in cooperation with the NAHL Showcase.  Over 250 scouts were on hand during the five-day event, in which teams from the NAHL, 3HL, North American Prospects Hockey League (PHL) and Upper Midwest High School Elite League played under one roof.

Here are the results from the final day of 3HL competition:

Granite City Lumberjacks 6 – Chicago Hitmen 2
In the most lopsided game of the day, the Lumberjacks broke a 2-2 tie midway through the game on their way to a 6-2 win over Chicago.  Trevor Ness had a goal and two assists, Peter Linblad had three assists and Blayne Ellson and Tyler Cayemberg each had multi-point games.  The Hitmen got goals from Ben Boukal and Anthony Passarelli, both in the 2nd period.  The Lumberjacks concluded the Showcase in Blaine with a perfect 4-0 record.

Minnesota Flying Aces 4 – St. Louis Jr. Blues 3
The Jr. Blues clawed back to within one goal late in the game, but fell short as the Flying Aces notched their 3rd win of the Showcase with a 4-3 win over St. Louis.  Minnesota took a 4-1 lead early in the 3rd period with goals from John Meehan, Tyler Pionk, Brett Jenkins and Mike Kucil.  The Jr. Blues got goals from Ryan Basgall, Daniel Rosse and Trace Jablin.  Tyler Mueller was solid in goal for the Flying Aces, making 34 saves.

Quad City Jr. Flames 2 – North Iowa Bulls 1
Behind a pair of power play goals from Tony Buchal and Shane Piggot, the Quad City Jr. Flames edged out a 2-1 win over the North Iowa Bulls, who remain winless on the 2011-12 season.  After the Jr. Flames goals in the 1st and 2nd periods, the Bulls got a goal late in the 3rd period from Ryan Ach, but could not get the equalizer in the closing seconds as Quad City goaltender Michael Meadows shut the door.  Matthew Bartels got the loss for the Bulls, but played well making 24 saves.

Twin City Steel 4 – Peoria Mustangs 3
Twin City erased a 3-2 Peoria lead with two goals late in the 3rd period, as the Steel bested the Mustangs 3-2 on the final day of the Showcase.  Two goals from Michael Mikulan gave the Mustangs a 3-2 lead early in the 3rd period, but Steel goals from Adam Slagle and Kyle Kuntz gave Twin City the win, improving their record to 2-1-2.  So far, every single game Twin City has played has been decided by a goal.  With the loss, Peoria’s record fell to 3-2.  All team in the 3HL Central Division are tied with six points.
