Friday Finals: Chesney helps Mustangs stay unbeaten

Oregon 1 @ Peoria 4 - Three goals in the second period sent the Peoria Mustangs past the Oregon Tradesmen in a 4-1 final score. After a tied 1-1 first period, Mustangs forward Massimo (1:21) netted his first goal of the season for a 2-1 lead. Later in the period, Ethan Chesney scored back-to-back goals to extend the Mustangs lead ending the second period, 4-1. Peoria kept Oregon off the scoresheet for the remainder of the game to claim their third win of the season. Peoria goaltender Joseph Ambroffi stopped 31 of the 32 shots he faced in the contest.

Butte 5 @ Sheridan 2 - The Butte Cobras offensive game opened up in the second period after trailing in the first period against the Sheridan Hawks taking a 5-2 win. Sheridan scored the lone goal in the first period with Danny Shelden. In the middle period, the Cobras scored four unanswered goals to take a 4-1 lead. Tamer Billman (3:54), Micah Williamson (7:17), Caelin Chinery (11:41) and Nicholas Bradshaw (14:04) all scored. In the third period, Sheridan got back on the board with Makhai Sparks (9:11) making the score 4-2. Late in the period, the Cobras added another goal with Caelin Chinery (18:53) for a 5-2 final.

Wausau 1 @ Rochester 6 - The Rochester Grizzlies topped the Wausau Cyclones in a 6-1 game to remain undefeated. The Grizzlies opened up the first period with three unanswered goals. Connor Stoffel (1:35) netted his second of the year and was then followed up shortly after by a goal from Spencer Klotz (3:03). Zachary Laurila (8:20) scored his first of the season to get the Grizzlies ahead 3-0 to end the first period. In the middle frame, Luke Sawicky (3:18) added to the Rochester lead, 4-1. The Cyclones netted their lone goal from Brennan Valencia (5:32). With just one second remaining in the period, Riley Dueber (19:59) scored to end the period, 4-1. In the third period, Tyler Ownby (16:52) scored for a final score of 6-1 as the Grizzlies stayed unbeaten. Rochester goaltender Lucas Henderson was near perfect stopping 17 of the 18 shots he saw.

Atlanta 5 @ Mid Cities 2 - The Atlanta Capitals spoiled the Mid-Cities Jr. Stars opening night with a 5-2 win. With the first period tied 1-1, Atlanta opened up the scoring in the second period with Landon Welch (13:12) breaking the tie. Soon after, Brett Phillips (15:30) added to the Capitals lead to end the period, 3-1. Landon Welch (10:17) netted his second goal of the night to increase the Atlanta lead 4-1 in the third period. Late in the period and after a goal from Mid-Cities Ilnur Madiarov (15:57), the Stars pulled their goaltender for a last ditch effort. Harrison Flaacke (19:22) capitalized on the empty net for a 5-2 final. Capitals netminder Coleman Garnier stopped 23 of the 25 shots he faced.

Mason City 5 @ Minnesota 2 - The Mason City Toros picked up a win over the Minnesota Loons in a 5-2 game. Loons forward Willem Kerr (1:34) netted his first of the year for an early 1-0 lead. The Toros answered back with back-to-back goals from Luke Robertson (7:13) and David Loarh (14:51) for a 2-1 lead. The Loons answered back near the halfway mark of the second period when Holden Pratt (9:59) netted his third of the year for a 3-2 score. Within the final minutes of the second, David Loarh (19:03) and Cal Levis III (19:43) both scored to end the period with a lead for Mason City, 4-2. In the third period, Matt Kochanowski (2:57) closed out the game with a Toros goal for a 5-2 final.

Austin 2 @ TX RoadRunners 7 - In a battle of Texas, the RoadRunners defeated the Austin Ice Bats in a 7-2 final. Both teams were notched 1-1 going into the second period until Sebastian Hale (10:37) scored an unassisted goal for Austin to take a 2-1 lead. The RoadRunners went on a run scoring six unanswered goals starting in the second period with Kyle Portlock (16:40), Matev Ivanov (18:09) and TJ Brugaletta (18:27) to end the second up 4-2. In the third frame, Jack Klunk (8:01), Derek Boutin (12:23) and Matvev Ivanov (16:29) all scored for a RoadRunners win, 7-2. RoadRunners netminder Nash Willson had a stellar night backstopping 37 shots.

Yellowstone 2 @ Badlands 5 - The Badlands Sabres came out of the gates hot, scoring three unanswered goals in the first to ultimately take a 5-2 win over the Yellowstone Quake. Seth Roskos (7:42) started the scoring for the Sabres which was quickly followed up by Zach Vockler (7:58). Late in the opening frame, Carter Johnson (16:29) added to the Sabres lead to end the frame up 3-0. In the second period, Yellowstone went on a run adding two goals to the scoresheet from Teagan Scheurer scoring twice. In the closing period, Gabriel Harrison (3:45) and AJ Petrotto (6:01) closed out the scoring for a 5-2 Badlands win. Sabres goaltender Zack Broxterman picked up the win stopping 34 shots in the contest.

Helena 6 @ Great Falls 2 - The reigning Frontier Division Champion, Helena Bighorns, picked up a win over the Great Falls Americans, 6-2. Helena got on the board with back-to-back goals with Harlen Wojtusik (8:28) and Logan Powers (9:46). Late in first, Baden Powell (15:43) netted his first of the year for a 2-1 score. The Americans came out scoring first in the second period with Tyler Sunagel (5:40) to even the game 2-2. Helena answered back, going on an uninterrupted four goal tear with Tyler Bloom (12:48) and TJ Norris scoring twice to end the period with a Bighorns lead, 5-2. Tyler Bloom (16:06) would add the final goal of the game in the third period for a 6-2 final. Helena goaltender Jesse Schindel picked up the win stopping 27 shots.
