Long Beach defenseman Carney makes college commitment
The Long Beach Sharks of the NA3HL are pleased to announce that Top Prospects defenseman Devin Carney has committed to play ACHA Division I hockey for Waldorf University.
Carney, 20, is currently in his third and final season playing junior hockey in the NA3HL. The 6’2/215 lbs. native of Wasilla, AK, arrived in Long Beach for the 2021-22 season after playing the 2020-21 season with the Bozeman Icedogs.
He has played 129 games in the NA3HL, 92 with the Sharks, and tallied 9 goals 20 assists with a 32 plus/minus. Devin is also a two-time Top Prospects Tournament participant, which included the 2023 and 2022 events.
Devin wore the “C” for the Sharks this season and was the foundation to the blue line all season. He was the most reliable and consistent defenseman for the Sharks this season and helped guide them to another playoff appearance.
“Waldorf University is getting a natural leader, a stelar defenseman, and most importantly a great person for the next four years. Congratulations to Devin and his family for his commitment,” said Sharks head coach Chris Lloyd.
"Devin is a huge addition to our defensive unit, as well as the program," Waldorf head coach Mike Heitkamp said. "He is a big and mobile defenseman that can take control of the defensive zone. He skates well for a bigger bodied guy and sees the ice well in all three zones. His strongest attribute is that he simplifies his game and does not overreact."
"He is one of the guys that we have been keeping an eye on for two years," said Coach Heitkamp. "He is very capable of coming in his freshman year and having a major impact to our program both on and off the ice. I see Devin being a critical part of our success as we continue to develop our hockey program. We expect him to take on a leadership role in his career at Waldorf. We are extremely excited to see him in a Warrior jersey next fall."
